Contest for the best video about studies at the University of Lodz and the life in Łódź! The first steps at a new university and in a new city can be quite challenging, especially for students coming from abroad. But, the UL students can surely get it right!… And that’s why we have a competition for you: record a short, instructional video (1-3 mins) in which you guide freshpeople (or new incoming students) to one of the aspects of studying at the UL or living in Łódź. Feel free to show an interesting and accessible way – so that it will help them navigate through the student life. We will leave you a lot of freedom in terms of the plot design and recording format. Just remember about the basic technical requirements and other important things, which we put in the regulations available below this text. The deadline for sending videos to iso@uni.lodz.pl is December 31, 2019. At the beginning of the new calendar year, the Jury will choose the three best videos, the authors of which will get a brand new kick scooter (and a helmet! Safety is on our priority list 😊).

BECOME A MENTOR

WHO IS A MENTOR?

Mentor UL – being helpful changes the world for the better!

A Mentor is a student of the University of Lodz who assists international students with their first steps in Łódź. Newly admitted students find themselves in a place that is completely new for them. In many cases, this is their first time in Poland, and what they hope for is meeting and talking to someone of similar background – a student just like them. They are especially amazed if this person shares their own culture and comes from their home country or region, but this is not much of a requirement. Virtually every student eager to show them round and give advice is practically invaluable.

As a Mentor, you are their first contact person in Poland. It is likely you become friends and you will probably get to know them even before arrival.  Your knowledge and support are of great value for those facing a life revolution. Because moving to another country for a semester may already be called a life revolution, and moving there for a few years is surely one.

The tasks (and adventures) of a Mentor include showing a new student round the campus, helping him or her make the dormitory their new home, guiding them through paperwork at faculties and different offices – and some of these events are completely new for an international visitor. You will also help them discover the city, find places of interest, and support their efforts with Polish-speaking services in  town. You combine the roles of a campus buddy and a city guide for them. Perhaps what works best is taking care of someone from your home country, or from one with related culture. However, you may also take up the challenge of being a Mentor for someone from the opposite corner of the globe. The things that matter most are your experience, communication skills, and sensitivity. This means being aware that your old memories, your old days of dealing with strange signs and documents as you were cluelessly alone, may be like the current experience of an incoming student.

What every Mentor gets in return are numerous signs of gratitude, as well as – in most cases – lifelong friendships. There also come benefits such as boosting your guiding and managerial skills, practicing speaking different languages, and building up your intercultural awareness. You will cooperate and maybe find a new solution to a common problem, or make new like plans such as trips to unknown places abroad or signing up for a new kind of student mobility. Perhaps you will develop an international student club. Or maybe you will author an expert guide one day?

If you feel that being a Mentor is the right thing for you, fill out an application form till 27 May 2019: bit.ly/ULmentor
